"Why'd They Do That?"
[ Back to Article Titles Page ] [ Back to Home Page ]
There used to be a program on television called "How'd They Do That" and on that program the producers showed many truly amazing things that people did and they went behind the scenes to show how it was that these people accomplished these truly amazing feats. Now, I don't know whether or not that program is still on today as I no longer watch what they call public television, but the Lord has put it upon my heart to write this little article and as you have noticed, I have entitled it, "Why'd They Do That". People today do some truly amazing things and it so often seems that when you think you've seen it all, somebody comes up with something which is even more amazing. It is a sad fact that the majority of these things are increasingly so terribly wicked that we so often think that this thing is the lowest that mankind could possibly ever stoop.
I believe we can all remember a man named Jeffrey Dahmer who committed some truly terrible acts of sexual derangement upon many young men and even went beyond that and mutilated those victims and even ate the flesh of his victims. I'm sure we can all remember thinking how truly terrible these acts were and I believe we can also remember thinking, "How could a person do such a thing?". I believe we can all remember a woman named Susan Smith who strapped her two little dear sweet boys in the back seat of her car and rolled that car off into a lake in Union, South Carolina, drowning those little innocent children. I'm sure we can all remember thinking, "How could a Mother stoop so low as to do such a terrible thing to her own little children?".
Friends, people do perform some truly amazing things and we find it so hard to understand. Now, just as I believe those television people took the wrong approach to the theme of their program, I also believe that most people, (Christians and lost people alike), take the wrong approach in trying to understand the things people do. We so often tend to try and understand how people could do these things and we should be focusing on why people do what they do.
As a Christian, we know that we are supposed to love everybody and yet we sometimes find it hard to love that little child sitting on the back row in the church writing in the song books. We find it even harder to love that man who raped and dismembered and even ate so many young men. We find it hard to love that woman who drowned her two little children. I could go on and on, but the point I'm trying to make here is that we find it hard to love those who do things that we know to be wrong.
Then there's the lost man who thinks he's got to straighten up his life and stop doing things he knows to be wrong before he can go to church or get forgiveness for all the bad that he has done. That poor lost person who thinks he is so bad that he cannot get forgiveness.
We've all been guilty of focusing on how people could do such things as they do and we should be focusing on why we do what we do. Many people are ready to admit that everyone has a soul, but we've missed it in that light, because everyone doesn't have a soul. The truth is that everyone is a soul and not has a soul. As I said, the Lord has put it upon my heart to write this little article and it is my prayer that He will use this little article to help each of us to realize just why we all do what we do, thereby making it easier to understand and love those people who do these things. And it is my prayer also that those who read this little article who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour will see where they stand and that they will believe that God loves them and wants them to be His children.
As I said, everyone is a soul. Each one of us is a soul and this body we see is just the container we abide in. Now, each one of us will live forever. The only difference between the man who has accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and the lost person is where we will live forever. The man who has accepted this wonderful gift from God will spend eternity with Him in heaven and the man who rejects this gift which is offered freely to all will spend eternity in the lake of fire in a place called hell. Think about that my friend. The one thing that all God's creatures fears is fire. Eternity is an awful long time and to spend it in agony, burning in a lake of fire is unthinkable let alone indescribable. Have you ever been burned? If you have you can know the pain that came from that burn. It's the most excruciating pain that can be experienced and yet there is a lake of fire that awaits every soul that rejects Jesus Christ's sacrifice.
With this is mind, I would like to try and clear up the misconception people have as to why we do what we do. First of all, many people think they are a sinner because they sin. That's why so many think they must clean up their life before they can get forgiveness. That's not what makes a person a sinner at all. People are not sinners because they sin. We sin because we are sinners. I have two dogs out there in my yard and they bark all the time. Now those dogs are not dogs because they bark. I can bark, but I'm not a dog. Just because I could bark wouldn't make me a dog. No, those dogs bark because they are dogs. They can't help but bark, because that's what dogs do. The same is true for a sinner. That's what sinners do. They sin. Now, you will notice that I said that we sin because we are sinners. I am a sinner just as much as Jeffrey Dahmer who I mentioned before. Friends, I was born a sinner and so were you. The one thing to realize is that God doesn't have a Richter scale on sin. The good man who has done the best he can all his life will die and go to the very same hell that the Jeffrey Dahmers of this world will go to.
If that were the end of the story, it would be so very pitiful. But, that's not the end. God in His infinite love for His creation came down to this earth in the person of Jesus Christ to though He knew no sin, take the sin of the whole world upon Himself and to die on a cross for those sins. He died upon that cross for my sins and He died upon that cross for your sins. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. That's me and that's you. We all sin because we are sinners. That's what sinners do. Now, the wages of sin are death. That means someone has to die to pay those wages. The song says, "Just as I am without one plea, but that Thy blood was shed for me, I come". The Bible, God's Holy Word says, "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8. We cannot clean up our life enough to earn this gift of salvation. God offers this gift to us freely just as we are. Now, we know that we are all sinners and that we sin because we are sinners. We know that the wages for that sin is death, that life must be given for that sin. We know that Christ died on a cross for our sins while we were yet sinners. Now, how can we be sure that our sins are forgiven and that we will live forever with God in heaven rather than spend eternity paying the penalty for our sins? The Word of God gives us the instructions to knowing that our sins are forgiven. The Word of God says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9. Now, there are those who may say that they are beyond help because they are too far into a life of sin. God's Word makes it clear that this gift of Salvation is available to everyone as it says, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:13. Now, I have confessed to you that I am a sinner, but the only difference between me and Jeffrey Dahmer is the fact that I have confessed it to the Lord and He has forgiven me. Have you confessed your sin to Him and asked His forgiveness and trusted the shed blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse you from all your sins. There is no need for you to delay or to try and clean up your life. Now is the time of Salvation. You don't need some preacher to pray with you. You can get down on your knees right now and confess that you are a sinner and ask God to save you. If you will only believe in Him, you will be just as saved as any preacher. God says, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." Friend, I love you with all my heart, but what's most important is that you believe that God loves you and that He wants you to believe in the shed blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse you from every sin. If you have not received this gift of Salvation and if you believe what I have just told you which is straight from God's own Word, I beg you to listen for Him knocking at the door of your heart. Please don't reject Him. Ask Him in and He will save you.
