"The Great Physician"
[ Back to Article Titles Page ] [ Back to Home Page ]
Modern Medicine. It's come a long way, they say. In reality, I suppose it has and yet man cannot yet cure anything. The very profession is even called "Practicing Medicine" and sometimes, more than others, I can see why they call it that. Sometimes, I even believe that those who are practicing Veterinary medicine have come a lot further than those who treat humans. This belief comes from experiences noticed so frequently in doctor's diagnostic practices, or their lack of it. The very first thing most doctors ask you when you go to them for help is, "What's wrong with you?". When you do tell them what you believe to be your problem, they more often than not become rude about it. A good example of this is when my brother went to the doctor suffering from flu like symptoms and the doctor asked him what his problem was, My brother told him he believed he had the flu and the doctor asked him, "What makes you think you have the flu?". Well, my brother, being the person he is, replied, "What makes you think I don't?".
A dear lady I know was taken to the hospital where she was diagnosed with an inner ear infection, but it was later discovered that she had had a stroke. She still suffers from that today.
Another good example is the recent injury I myself suffered. I dislocated my knee cap at work and was taken to the emergency room for treatment. The practicing physician at the emergency room had ex-rays done and after looking at them prescribed me some inflammatory medicine and some pain pills and told me I would be out of work three (3) days. I was out of work for over two (2) weeks and should still be out now, if not for an overzealous nurse where I work talking the company doctor into sending me back to work on light duty. That accident happened over a month ago and I still am suffering from it and after three (3) different sets of prescriptions and physical therapy on a regular basis, I am still not cured. In fact, they can't even get together on whether to use heat or ice in dealing with the inflammation. Now, I'm not completely down on doctors, because I know they are for the most part a real asset to mankind. The point here is that with all the modern technology and medicines, doctors still cannot cure anything, (not even what they call the common cold).
Now that you've suffered through that somewhat lengthy analogy, there is some good news. That good news is that there is one Great Physician from whom all healing comes. There is never a missed diagnosis, for He knows exactly what's wrong with us every time. He never fails in His healing either. That great Physician is God.
The Bible tells many events that took place while God was on this earth in the form of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, concerning healing, but there is one that is very dear to my heart. It's found in the book of Matthew, in chapter 9, verses 1-8. If you have never read it, I strongly urge you to do so. It tells of the man in the city of Capernaum who was bedridden and sick of the palsy. Well, all the physicians were unable to cure this poor man, so his friends heard that Jesus was there, so they took him, bed and all before Jesus to be healed. When Jesus saw this man's pitiful condition, He said to him, "Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee." Well, those scribes couldn't believe this and they within themselves accused the Lord of blasphemy. Jesus knew their problem as well and informed them of the terrible heart condition they had. Then He told the man with the palsy, "Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house." The Lord didn't cure those scribes of their terrible problem because they didn't come to Him for help. He did however cure the man with the palsy, because he came to Him knowing that only He could help him.
Now, that happened a long time ago and I know it really happened, because the Word of God says it did. Some may say that it really didn't happen or that that kind of stuff doesn't happen any more, but if you will read the 8th verse you will plainly see that when the multitude saw this, they marvelled, and glorified God. Though Jesus did have compassion upon this man and though He did see the skepticism of those scribes, He do that great miracle out of mere compassion, nor to prove anything. He did it to bring glory to God to whom all glory belongs.
That is the sole purpose of this little article and I have a story to tell that was just as much a miracle as the one I just told you about. The Lord did, does, always has, and always will heal and not to prove, but only to provide that which is needful and that which will bring glory and honor to it's rightful place.
On May the 5th, 1973, I was aboard a ship in California and I had an accident where I fell 75 feet. I was in a coma for ten (10) days. After coming back to, I began having headaches. I had headaches almost every day from that time on. These headaches were very severe headaches. There were many things that would bring on these headaches, but the one sure way to bring one of them on was to read. I couldn't even read an article in the newspaper without bringing one of them on. That went on for over nineteen (19) years. Well, the night the Lord saved me, He put in my heart such a desire to read His Word that I couldn't shake it. The very next day, that desire was so great that I got into His Word, fully expecting to have a terrible headache. Now, I really and truly did hate those headaches because of their severity, but I so wanted to read God's Word that I was prepared to accept it. Well, to my surprise and amazement, I read it and I kept on reading it and I kept on reading it and guess what. I never got a headache. Not even a clue of a headache, much less the very severe headaches I was so accustomed to getting from just reading a little bit. I am so happy to tell you and anyone who will listen, that I have been in God's Word ever since then without one headache from it. I can read His Word all day long and never even a hint of a headache. I now read all the time, whether it's in God's or books by great men of God. Now this is nothing for me to boast or be proud of for I had absolutely nothing to do with it. I had been to many doctors in that almost 20 years about those headaches and all they could do was prescribe pain medicines to try and cover up the problem. The night the Lord saved me, He not only said, "Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee", which would have been all that I would ever need, but He went even further and healed my physical infirmities as well. Praise God, I can now write this article without fear getting a headache that would probably keep me out of work tonight.
If you will notice in the previous paragraph, I said God healed my physical infirmities, (plural). Well, besides the severe headaches I had experienced for almost twenty (20) years, I had also been plagued with symptoms much like those of a heart-attack for about a year prior to that wonderful night. I had been to doctors and even spent time in the hospital with no results. Now, these attacks had awaken me in the middle of the night with pain so severe that it would almost awaken the whole house. I have not had one of these attacks since the Lord saved me. I owe this to no doctor, but to God only and all praise and glory be to Him. I indeed had multiple heart problems that night and through His infinite wisdom and mercy, He made sure that the most important one was taken care of first. He, is the only one who can perform a guaranteed perfectly successful heart transplant every time with no adverse side affects. There is absolutely no rejection from the other organs, only by other men sometimes. Now, I can truly be of "good cheer" as was the man sick of the palsy and every time I pick up something to read I can praise God alone for the wonderful "Great Physician". Why on earth would I want to waste this blessing reading of anything but Him? Why should I not write as many articles as He gives me to try and bring glory to Him where it truly belongs? Indeed, each time I can get my hands on something to read, I can say, thank you God for all your many blessings! Indeed, each time my new heart beats I can say, thank you God, for my new heart! Truly, each time He gives me a new article to write, I can say, thank you God for this seed you have given me to plant and this opportunity to try and praise You!
You know, God's Word says He will grant us the desires of our heart. We,, this promise as with all the others is so true. With this new heart that He has given me, He has also given me new desires. My main desire right now is to serve Him and to further the cause of Christ. He has not called me to preach His wonderful Gospel and He alone knows what will best serve Him. I don't know why He has given me this desire to write these little articles, nor why He gives me the articles, but I pray and I ask you, if you are saved, to pray with me that these little articles will serve Him and Him alone. I realize that this article is somewhat long, but I pray that it has served as a lasting blessing to you who have taken the time to read it. If so, then I ask that you will praise God for it and thank Him for allowing me to be your servant and mostly important His!!!
God Bless You
