"Lifers"

"There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it."  Ecclesiastes 8:8.  These are the words of king Solomon, who God Himself proclaimed to be the wisest man other than the Lord Jesus Christ, ever to live on this earth.

When I was in the military, we had a name for those who were making a career of the military.  That name we called those people was "Lifers".  Though I didn't realize it at the time, that word is actually found in the dictionary and is defined as, "A career serviceman".  At the time of my military service, I had plans of being one of those people, but again though I didn't know it at the time, the Lord had different plans for my life.  This wise man, king Solomon, though it appears in the book of Ecclesiastes became a very depressed and distressed man, actually came to realize that the true war that every man fights every day is that of wisdom.  People who are in the military, who have decided to make that service their career, actually never know how much of their life will be spent in that service.  Most of those people who we at that time called lifers have either been discharged or they have died.  The war we were in when I was in the military is over and I have been discharged from that war.  Again, I didn't realize it at the time, but that wasn't the only war going on.

The devil has lied to men ever since God created the first man and one of the greatest lies he has proclaimed is that a person will live forever.  Now, every man with any mind at all knows deep down that someday he will die, but the devil has so blinded men that they always think it will be just that, "someday".   What king Solomon realized and tried to warn men about was the fact that "someday" could very well be today and that decision is not up to that man, but it is God who decides when "someday" is.  He said, "There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death:".

I recently came to know of a man, through a prayer request, who had been involved in a terrible accident wherein he was crushed by a very large piece of machinery.  When that man got up that morning and left his house, I don't know what all was on his mind, but I can assure you that having an accident and possibly being killed was not one of those things.  All that day, I'm sure this man had many thoughts, but right up to the very second that piece of machinery rolled over on top of him, I am positive that this thing never entered his mind.  This man has never regained consciousness since that time, because the doctors who are treating him don't want him conscious for his own protection.  Those doctors have taken one of this man's legs off during his unconsciousness and this man doesn't even realize yet that he has lost his leg.

Now, the man I have just told you about is lost and though he didn't realize it at the time, he was unconscious even before that thing rolled over on him.  He was unconscious to the fact that "someday" could be very near.  Friend, it's the devil's business to keep men unconscious to the fact that this day could be "someday".  There is one thing that every creature that God created fears and that one thing is fire.  All creatures have a terrible fear of fire and man is no exception.  If you were to throw fire in the face of any of God's creatures, they all would nearly have a heart attack trying to escape this certain torment and yet, God's Word warns us over and over that an eternity of torment in a lake of fire awaits those whose "someday" comes without their accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour.

As you read this little article, it is obvious that your "someday" has not yet arrived, but please be assured that no matter what the devil tells you, your "someday" could and even may come before you finish reading it.  King Solomon warned that, "neither hath he (man) power in the day of death:"  Friend, if you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, God has given you that power and I urge you to accept it now.  "But as many as received Him, to them gave He the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believed on His name."  John 1:12.  Whether or not you have or even will receive Him, you will not have the power to know or control your "someday", but the only way you can be assured that when it comes you will not wake up in the lake of fire to be tormented throughout eternity, is to call upon the name of the Lord.  Do it now and please don't delay.  "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."  Romans 10:13.
